The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) issued a stern warning to the party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Monday, threatening him with a “stiffer penalty” if he engages in any actions that undermine the party’s unity, peace, and integrity.
This warning was part of the resolution adopted during the LP’s NEC meeting at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja. The statement, signed by the party’s National Chairman Julius Abure, cautioned Obi against any conduct that could destabilize the party. It read, in part: “NEC hereby cautions the former presidential candidate of our great party not to participate in any action capable of undermining the peace, unity, and integrity of the party. The NEC will not hesitate to impose stiffer penalties if found culpable.”
The NEC also addressed internal issues within the party, particularly regarding the leadership of the House of Representatives Caucus. The council noted a lack of cohesion among party members in the House and the failure of current leadership to effectively represent the party’s ideology. As a result, Honourable Victor Adam Ogene was removed from his leadership role due to dereliction of duty, and Honourable Barrister Ben Etanabene was appointed as the new Labour Party Caucus Leader in the House.
The NEC further mandated Ogene to immediately return all party assets, including financial contributions from other Labour Party lawmakers, and to provide a full account of the funds. The party vowed to take all necessary measures to reclaim its properties.
In closing, the Labour Party assured Nigerians that under its current leadership, it is committed to providing good governance, economic growth, security, infrastructure development, and a robust electoral system, with a focus on internal democracy. The party pledged to offer a new vision for Nigeria, promising leadership that is transparent and accountable.
