The Cross River State House of Assembly has removed Hon. Cyril Omini, member representing Yakurr I State Constituency, as Chairman of the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation. The decision was announced during plenary on Tuesday by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem.
According to the Speaker, Hon. Omini was relieved of his position due to gross misconduct and consistent absenteeism, both within the House and in his role as chairman of the influential committee. The removal followed rising concerns among lawmakers about his conduct, which was deemed detrimental to the effective functioning of the House.
In response to the development, the Speaker also announced the constitution of a special investigative committee to probe the allegations against Hon. Omini. The committee is chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the 10th Assembly, Hon. Sylvester Agabi, and is expected to report back to the House within seven days with its findings and recommendations.
Following Omini’s removal, Hon. Okon Owuna, member representing Akamkpa I State Constituency, was appointed as the new Chairman of the Committee on Finance and Appropriation.
The Finance and Appropriation Committee plays a critical role in shaping the state’s fiscal policy, overseeing budget implementation, and ensuring financial discipline. Owuna’s appointment is expected to bring renewed stability and direction to the committee’s work as the Assembly intensifies its oversight responsibilities.
