The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, and the leadership of the House, on Tuesday held a high-level meeting with the 18 Local Government Area (LGA) Chairmen in his office, focusing on strengthening governance, promoting unity among stakeholders, and ensuring better service delivery at the grassroots.
In his address, Speaker Ayambem charged the chairmen to build an environment where governance can succeed for the benefit of the state’s growth and development. He emphasized the need for collective effort among all arms of government to achieve the goals of the state.
He also used the occasion to speak on the recent suspension of Hon. Theresa Ushie, Chairman of Bekwarra LGA, stating that the decision was not based on vendetta or witch-hunt. According to him, it followed repeated impeachment notices from the legislative council and mounting public concerns. “The action taken was in response to the demands of the people and her legislative arm. Leadership comes with responsibility, and we must all be accountable,” Ayambem said.

The Speaker further cautioned that any elected or appointed official who acts contrary to the expectations of public service would be treated with the same firm approach. He reminded the chairmen that none of them is a sole administrator and charged them to make the grassroots count by working closely with councilors and stakeholders. He also emphasized the importance of supporting Governor Bassey Otu to fully realize the People First agenda of the administration.
The Speaker encouraged the chairmen to work in full collaboration with their councilors, local stakeholders, and communities to promote peace and progress within their jurisdictions.
Also speaking, the Leader of the 10th Assembly, Rt. Hon. Francis Asuquo, described the amendment of the Local Government Law as a step taken in the interest of every Cross Riverian. He explained that a productive relationship between chairmen and members of the House would enhance governance and support Governor Bassey Otu’s People First Agenda. He added that local government leaders must carry stakeholders along in their activities to ensure inclusive and transparent leadership.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government, Hon. Eyo Bassey, called for a more respectful and constructive relationship between council chairmen and councilors. He noted that such cooperation was necessary to reduce recurring complaints and strengthen local government operations across the state.
Speaking on behalf of the 18 chairmen, Hon. Yibala Inyang, Chairman of Yakurr LGA and Chairman of the Forum of LG Chairmen, expressed gratitude to the House of Assembly for its continued support. He assured the Speaker and Assembly members that the chairmen are committed to working closely with their councilors and stakeholders.
“We will continue to uphold unity and deliver on our responsibilities to make the Governor and the people of Cross River State proud,” Inyang said. “Our collaboration with the House will be strengthened for the benefit of all.”
